The hinge on my laptop has broken away from the back of the lid. This means that, when I open the lid, the hinge moves independently of the lid, and starts pressing on the screen bezel, causing it to crack and come away from the main body of the laptop. Gently pulling the bezel away from the screen makes the defect visible, as in the following image:

The rest of the laptop is in good shape - the damage was not caused by any kind of external impact, such as by being dropped, nor was it caused by extending any hinge beyond its designed range of motion - I simply opened the lid one day and heard the bezel crack away from the rest of the lid.

While this laptop is no longer covered under HP's warranty, I bought it from a reseller who cover it under their own warranty. In order to claim under that warranty, however, they have asked me to confirm that this is the sort of manufacturing defect that would ordinarily be covered by HP.

Is this the sort of manufacturing defect that HP's warranty would cover?

Hi @Ymbirtt,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concern regarding the hinge issue on your HP laptop, where the hinge has detached from the lid and is causing the screen bezel to separate. I’ll be glad to clarify how HP warranty coverage typically applies in this situation.

About HP Warranty Coverage

HP’s standard limited warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship that occur under normal use conditions.
If the hinge or lid assembly were to separate or crack without any physical damage, drop, or misuse, HP would generally consider this a manufacturing defect and, if the device were within HP’s warranty period, it would typically be repaired or replaced under warranty.

Since your unit is no longer under HP warranty, the coverage now depends on the reseller’s service warranty terms.

Next Steps

  • Please contact your reseller or the store where the product was purchased and share the same details and images of the hinge damage.
  • As you’ve mentioned that the reseller provides their own warranty, they should be able to process the repair or replacement for you, especially if it’s verified that the issue was not caused by external damage.
  • HP Authorized Service Centers can still assist with a paid repair if needed, but in your case, we recommend proceeding through the reseller’s warranty first, since that may be covered.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
