Hi:
You should be able to, but every time you turn on the notebook, you will get a CMOS 502 checksum error and you will need to clear that error and set the time and date in the BIOS.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the battery removal and replacement procedure.

If the notebook is currently running with the charger and just isn't charging the battery, you may want to just leave the battery installed until you buy a replacement for it.
Chapter 3 has the battery part number and description.

You're very welcome.
The easiest thing to do would be to purchase a USB portable hard drive (if you don't already have one) and copy and paste your user profile folders (documents, downloads, pictures, music, etc.) to the portable hard drive.
