System upgrade has been running for 6 hours and does not look like ending. What is the solution?

Hi @BW681,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I completely understand how  it must feel to see your laptop stuck in a system upgrade for so long. Let’s work through this together and see if we can get things moving again.

Could you please share the exact HP laptop model you’re using, along with any details about what you see on the screen right now (for example, is it showing a percentage, a spinning circle, or just frozen)? That will help me guide you more precisely.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

  • Check activity: Look for signs that the laptop is still working (hard drive light blinking, fan running). If it’s active, the update may just be taking longer than expected.
  • Patience with large updates: Major Windows upgrades can sometimes take several hours, especially if there are many files or limited storage space.
  • Force restart (if frozen): If the screen hasn’t changed for hours and there’s no sign of activity, press and hold the power button until the laptop shuts down. Wait a minute, then power it back on. Often, Windows will either resume the update or roll back safely.
  • Safe mode option: If it fails to boot normally, you may need to start in Safe Mode and run Windows Update Troubleshooter.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
