Generally, it is not required that you remove (uninstall) an older (previous) version of the fingerprint reader software before you apply the newer version of the software.
Check the current version on the Device Manager:
Looking for Driver Version 4.5.701.0
Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager
Open Biometric Devices > Right-Click on the Sensor (Synaptics FP Sensors...)
Properties > Driver
- You may, if you like, uninstall the Existing Device (from within Properties > Driver) and then install your downloaded package. You may also update the driver (again, from within Properties > Driver) and browse to use the downloaded package.
- You may uninstall the driver from within the Device Manager > Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you have saved the installation file (likely Downloads) > and install the package manually
What else?
It is possible, though a bit unlikely in the case of a workstation or probook on which you manage the software using the Softpaq Download Manager, that you must first update other HP software / drivers for your computer and then try the update for the fingerprint driver. For example, if the Chipset, the BIOS, or other software is in need of an update, install these first and then come back to the driver for the fingerprint reader.
The general sequence of events:
Check for - and update - Windows Updates
If any Updates are installed, Restart the computer even if the instructions do not say you must do so.
Open your SDM software > Check for Updates > install any updates except the fingerprint driver.
If any Updates are installed, Restart the computer even if the instructions do not say you must do so.
Open your SDM software > Check for Updates > Update the fingerprint driver
After the driver is installed, Restart the computer
Does this guarantee the software will install? No. It does provide the foundation that makes it possible to do so.

Thank you Dragon-Fur. I have now fixed the broken HP SDM as it would not initialize, and installed a couple of updates. In the device manager (Biometric devices/fingerprint reader) I see that the driver is now 4.5.701 A2, however the 'Apps' list accessed from the windows key - 'settings' shows the driver version being 4.5.351.0. I'm inclined to believe the device manager's opinion, that the driver is now up to date, but curious that the 'app' list still shows the earlier version. I have restarted the PC several times in the hope that the app version will update.
Fun & games.

You are welcome.
Version Weirdness
I see the same discrepancy in my Zbook 17 G3 (we have the same WBF reader driver installed).
I would guess that it is either a glitch in the reporting setup or that we are "seeing" the Windows fingerprint driver information. Windows OS has its "own" fingerprint driver that works with some of the fingerprint readers (various computers). The Windows driver (when it is the only one necessary) supports Windows fingerprint logon.
This could be "malarky"... Just throwing around words at this point. Smiling.
It is Curious.
If I have time, I will delve into it and see what I can find.
In general, though, trust the SDM and what you see in the Device Manager. Smiling.
Happy Computing.

Thanks again for your insight. I had a situation a while ago where there were two different Conexant audio driver updates offered. The 'HD' driver and 'ISST' driver. One of your people suggested that the HD was HP and the ISST was Windows, I think, or visa-versa. Both seem to co-exist but I couldn't tell you which one is being used. The ISST version appears in the 'Apps' list. Go figure.
All good stuff to keep us thinking.
