aka Samsung PM991 is what you have. It's way faster than any SATA SSD. But it an OEM quality commonly provided by laptop makers from the factory. Its plugged in to a separate slot from where you would put the 2.5 inch SATA SSD. I would keep the NVME for the OS and use the 4 TB for storage. If you want to add in a 2.5 inch SSD you need this part at a minimum:

Hard drive connector L87952-001

Service Manual

See p. 35

Genuine HP Envy 17-CG HDD Hard Drive Cable Connector L87952-001 | eBay

Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

You would also need some kind of mounting bracket. HP does not make one available as a replacement part but you can easily fashion one from a generic rubber laptop hard drive cover. The connector is what you need to make the drive connect to the motherboard and it is proprietary.

Any 2.5 inch SATA SSD ultra thin (7mm) will work fine. The 4 TB 870 QVO would be OK. The model number you gave us is a model series so hard to know exactly what is inside it. Possible you have an M.2 SSD currently in which case, you can upgrade that to 4 TB M.2 (very hard to find) and your laptop would take a 2.5 inch SSD but you would need to procure the mounting and attaching hardware.

Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply.

The drive currently fitted is the NVMe SAMSUNG MZVLQ1T0HALB-000H1 which wen I googled appears to be an mid range NVMe 1.3 SSD that uses the M. 2 interface (2280).  So that seems to look good. I take it from your reply that its not just a swap out and I would need to find some HP brackets?
