HP ENVY m7-k010dx Notebook PC

I want to install a SSD on my HP ENVY m7-k010dx Notebook PC. I'm not sure what type of SSD will work for my particular model. If possible I would like to install one via the optical drive slot. Would that be slower than if I installed it internally?

The specs of your machine is

It has 1TB 5400RPM hard drive  now. You can upgrade it to 1TB or 2TB using standard 2.5" SSD's on market today; one example (very popular):

Sorry for not clarifying, but I want to add an additional harddrive. Either on the motherboard (if it has a slot) or with the optical drive.

Sorry, no where for you to add. Your machine supports only single HDD for storage. You can

(a) Replace HDD with SSD first (as mentioned above)

(b) Remove ODD (Optical Disc Drive).

(c) Format old HDD and put it to a caddy and use old ODD slot for storage

Note: Put new SSD to ODD slot won't work the right way.

Regards.
