Hello,
I am looking to upgrade the hardware of my HP EliteBook 845 G9. Specifically, I want to upgrade the SSD to 2TB and the RAM to either 32GB, 40GB (8GB + 32GB), or 64GB.
Current SSD Configuration: 512GB M.2 2280 PM9B1 PCIe Gen4x4
I replaced this SSD with a Lexar NM790 2TB M.2. While it offers good speeds and is more power efficient, my laptop crashes or freezes when running on battery, requiring a restart.
Question 1:
What are the recommended SSD options for this laptop? What factors should I consider when upgrading beyond capacity?
Current RAM Configuration: 16GB (2 x 8GB) SoDIMM, DDR5-4800, Samsung M425R1GB4BB0-CQK
I added a Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 SODIMM 32GB (1x32GB) DDR5 4800MT/s (PC5-38400) CL40 1.1V (CMSX32GX5M1A4800C40). However, the laptop runs very hot with this RAM.
Question 2:
What are the recommended RAM upgrades for this laptop? What should I consider when upgrading beyond capacity and DDR5-4800 specifications?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you!

Its specs

1. RAM: To get full benefit of dual channels architecture, please use SAME RAM on BOTH slots. RAM sticks are cheap now. You can upgrade to
32GB : Using Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR5-4800 SODIMM
64GB: Using Crucial 64GB Kit (32GBx2) DDR5-4800 SODIMM
2. STORAGE: You can upgrade to 2TB or even 4TB using Crucial T500 or Samsung 990EVO . Some drives with heat sink and/or double sided won't physically fit due to too thick.
Regards.

Hello,
Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate the recommendations, but I have some concerns regarding the information provided.
RAM:
From my understanding, DDR5 modules incorporate dual-channel architecture within each module. This means that even a single DDR5 module operates with two 32-bit channels, unlike DDR4 which requires two sticks for dual-channel performance. Therefore, using a single 32GB DDR5 stick should still provide dual-channel benefits. Additionally, there is no guarantee that the recommended RAM will run cooler. Are there any benchmarks or data to support this claim?
SSD:
Regarding the SSD recommendation, sources such as Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp indicate that the Samsung 990 EVO can run hot and does not appear to be more power-efficient than the Lexar NM790 2TB. Do you have any information or benchmarks that support its suitability over the Lexar NM790?
Lastly, are there any HP Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) parts available, or any certified upgrades that have been verified to work seamlessly with the HP EliteBook 845 G9? Insights from users who have successfully performed these upgrades would also be very helpful.
Best regards,
JustNick

I appreciate your input and understand your preference for Crucial and Samsung as trusted vendors.
However, I believe the problem is more specific than just choosing a brand.
The issue involves compatibility and performance, particularly regarding power consumption and stability when running on battery.
I would appreciate it if you could allow others to contribute who might have more specific insights or experience with this issue.
