This just started happening recently, up until this point I have not had a single issue with my computer. I was sitting on my couch using my computer to take care of some stuff for work and my cup, one of those 40oz tumblers 1/4 filled with water, fell on to the keyboard. Not a single drop of water came out of the cup and it fell from a few inches over the keyboard but like I said, nothing came out of the cup so there is zero water damage. Ever since that happened the screen will randomly start glitching and will then freeze up and I will have to restart the computer. The screen will also go black at random times but the backlight will stay on and this also requires a restart. I am not sure what is going on or what is causing this. I have run every kind of diagnostics on it that I can and it never finds any issues. I have also done every update that has ever needed done. I am not sure what to do other than to reach out to HP and see if I can send it in to get checked out. I NEED my computer for work, so this happening is very stressful. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Hi @CarngDirector,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how stressful this must be, especially when your laptop is essential for work. Based on your description, it sounds like the issue may be hardware-related, possibly triggered by the impact from the tumbler, even though no water was spilled.

What You Can Try First

1. Hard Reset the Laptop

This can clear residual power and reset hardware states:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect all peripherals and power.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and turn it on.

2. Run HP Display Diagnostics

Even if HP Support Assistant shows no issues, try the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool:

  • Restart and press Esc, then F2.
  • Go to Component Tests > Display.
  • Run the test and note any flickering or failures.

3. Update BIOS and Graphics Drivers

Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause display instability:

If the Issue Persists

Since this started after a physical event, there can be some damage, and it will not be covered under warranty. And maybe a Chargeable support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
