hello, I just bought an Elitebook 650 G9 and I want to add a second SSD drive.
I saw that there was a slot to either put a WWAN module or an SSD drive.
So I ordered an M.2 2230 SSD drive but it doesn't seem to fit.
Could you tell me what type of SSD should I put? Or maybe it is necessary to put a special support?
thanks in advance
Picture of the slot 22477W:
On the motherboard, we can seem 'ssd2' at the right and 'WWAN' at the left
when i try to put the ssd m.2 2230 the mounting hole does not fall on the screw thread. In addition, I have the impression that the connector forces a lot.

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Your HP EliteBook 650 15.6 Inch G9 Notebook PC (6N4K3AV), looking at the manual: https://kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_5817979_en-US-1.pdf (Illustrated parts catalog | HP® Customer Support) requires a different model M.2 2230 SSD -see p/n: M11042-001 "SKO-SSD 256GB 2230 PCIe NVMe Value", AND -as you speculated, a special support, with p/n: N00354-001 "SPS-SSD SUPPORT KIT":
The problem is that the 'support kit' is nowhere to be found or offered for sale, let alone was I able locating an online picture what it actually looks like...
[EDIT:] The mounting/support bracket for the M.2 2230 drive may look something like this:

Hope this was helpful.

Hello, thank you very much for the answer.
Regarding the SSD, is the slot an HP proprietary format or can I buy a compatible disk elsewhere?
The disc I ordered is this one: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0C28HLKNB?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Your laptop's manual suggests that your M.2 SSD slot has the SATA M.2 SSD (B+M Key) format, such as this example "2242" -42mm length -please measure to see if this length would reach the mounting hole: GamerKing Solid State-schijf M.2 2242 Interne harde schijf Van 128 GB 1 TB 512 GB 256 GB 64 GB Krach...:

Hello everbody and thanks a lot for any hints in advance!
Opening my brand new HP Elitebook 650 G9 (6F2N7EA) I found the same situation as displayed in the fotos attached to Gmerk's post. After wasting hours of time in the WWW I'm quite sure now, that the mounted M.2 socket is a B-Key: Beginning from the left 5 pins at the bottom and 6 pins on top followed by the B-key-notch.
The optionally added WWAN-module "Intel® XMM™ 7560 R+ LTE-Advanced Pro" has a format of 3042 and is also B-coded, this implies that a M.2 2242 SSD may fit. See WWAN_specifications. The measured distance between socket and nut is about 38 mm, so a SSD length of 42 may fit.
The quick specs for the notbook says "PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 Value Solid State Drive" for a second SSD, see Specifications. But B-coded SSDs only provide SATA III, what is 10 times slower than models working with PCIe 4x4.
Can someone confirm that a B-coded 2242 SSD is working in this WWAN/SSD2-slot?
And how can a modern NVMe SSD work in PCIe mode in a B-coded socket?
And why is the official HP doumentation for a business laptop model so inaccurate?

Hello all,
after additional search on the web I found some very rare SSD drives with M+B key working in NVME mode. Most of them with PCIe 3.0 x2 (Kingspec NE-XXX-2242) and only one (!) provided by Lenovo with PCIe x4 (link).
SSD M.2 modules with M+B-key should only provide PCIe x2 (link) or SATA, so the Lenovo x4 model seems to be designed in a propriatary format. And it is very expensive.
According to the official HP documentation, the second SSD socket should provide NVME with PCIe. So I'm going to order the Kingspec NE-XXX-2242 now - hoping the HP documentation doesn't screw me over. I will report the result..

Hello everybody!
Thank you very much for the different exchanges!
I bought the following drive https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0BW2T5J84 (SHARKSPEED SSD 1TB M.2 2242 NGFF SATA 3 42mm 6GB/s TLC 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive for Desktop and Laptop PC(1TB M .2 2242)).
It fits perfectly in the SSD2 slot:
On the other hand, Windows does not recognize it at all... And at the BIOS level, only 1 SSD is visible.
Do you have an idea?
Have a good day!

I have three ideas:
1.) BIOS/UEFI Settings: Access your laptop's BIOS/UEFI settings by tapping the F10 key during startup, and carefully check if the SATA M.2 drive is enabled in advanced settings or something like that. Some HP laptops allow you to enable/disable specific hardware components, so ensure that the SATA M.2 slot is enabled.
2.) Try Initializing Drive Using Disk Management: Follow the steps starting at timestamp 3:07 in this instructional YouTube video: How to Install an NVMe or SATA M.2 SSD in a PC - YouTube.
3.) Firmware/Driver Update: Ensure your laptop's BIOS/UEFI firmware is up to date from here: HP EliteBook 650 15.6 inch G9 Notebook PC (6H3C7AV) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Sup.... Additionally, download/run the Intel driver support assistant from here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18002/intel-driver-support-assistant.html.

It's very strange:
1) I check in the BIOS and didn't see any options for the SSD Storage.
2) For the disk management, the drive isn't see in Windows, so the disk manager didn't show it
3) I already update firmwares and drivers, and i installed Intel Support Assistant, but didn't fixed the issue...
I launch Hardware Diagnostic, and it show me only the first SSD drive....
