On Sept. 5, I installed McAfee, and today Sept 7 a message pops up. "Your device needs the latest security update." Why does the update message pop up, and do I need to do anything?

Antivirus and AntiMaware need frequent even daily or multiple per day updates to combat new known threats. An unpatched antirus is no better than no antivirus. You may have some options in the update settings for McAfee and you could turn off notices and just let it do the updates automatically. Personally I like to know its happening so I can be ready for a reboot if needed.
