My HP eh5000 series laptop started facing sleep mode problems. Whenever I close my laptop without shutting it down i.e putting it to sleep, and when I reopen it, it starts turning on and off on its own. Windows successfully launches when I close it. I've heard these hp models face sleep mode problems. Help? Advice?

Hi @lokesok2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the sleep mode.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP laptop entering an unstable state when waking from sleep mode can be due to several reasons such as power settings, driver issues, or hardware problems. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Update Windows and Drivers:

  • Windows Update:
    1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    2. Click "Check for updates" and install any available updates.
  • Driver Update:
    1. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).
    2. Expand the categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and System devices.
    3. Right-click each device and select "Update driver" > "Search automatically for updated driver software".

2. Update BIOS:

  • Go to the HP Support website and download the latest BIOS update for your laptop model. Follow the instructions on the site to update the BIOS.

3. Adjust Power Settings:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  2. Click on "Additional power settings".
  3. Select your current power plan and click on "Change plan settings".
  4. Click on "Change advanced power settings".
  5. Expand the "Sleep" section and adjust the settings:
    • Allow hybrid sleep: Set to Off.
    • Hibernate after: Set to Never.
    • Allow wake timers: Set to Disable.
  6. Expand the "Power buttons and lid" section and ensure the settings are as follows:
    • Lid close action: Set to Sleep.
    • Power button action: Set to Sleep.
    • Sleep button action: Set to Sleep.

Kindly check the next steps in the next post

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @lokesok2,

Please find the next set of steps below.

4. Disable Fast Startup:

  • Fast Startup can sometimes cause issues with sleep mode.
  1. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Click on "Choose what the power buttons do".
  3. Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable".
  4. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".
  5. Click "Save changes".

5. Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Sometimes third-party software can interfere with sleep mode. Boot your laptop in Safe Mode and check if the issue persists:
    1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    2. Go to the "Boot" tab and check "Safe boot".
    3. Restart your laptop.
  • If the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, a third-party application may be causing the issue. Identify and uninstall any recently installed or updated software.

6. Reset Power Plan to Default:

  • Resetting the power plan to its default settings can sometimes resolve issues.
  1. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan.
  3. Click on "Restore default settings for this plan".

7. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Performing a hard reset can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.
  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Disconnect all external devices and remove the power adapter.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power adapter and turn on the laptop.

8. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to check for hardware issues.
  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run the System Test and other relevant tests to check for hardware issues.

If the issue persists after trying all the above steps, there may be a deeper hardware or firmware problem. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance or visit an authorized service center.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
