Microsoft Windows 11

Chasing Smart Charging issue and HP Support Assistant says there's a BIOS update to apply. The update downloads, check points applied, etc. and the install starts with the gears spinning animation. The installation progress bar moves about 10% along and then ... nothing happens. Even after an hour and more of waiting ... nothing happens.

This can't be how it's supposed to work!

Hi @MrReggers

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern regarding the BIOS update process halting during installation. The gears animation and partial progress bar movement indicate that the update has initiated but is not completing as expected.

Let’s go through recommended steps to ensure the update proceeds smoothly:

Step 1: Confirm the Correct BIOS Update

  1. Visit the official HP Drivers & Support page for your product: HP Drivers & Downloads
  2. Enter your exact product number or serial number.
  3. Under the BIOS section, verify that the update listed matches your system’s ROM Family SSID. This ensures you are applying the correct file.

Step 2: Prepare the System Environment

  1. Open the HP App.
  2. Run Diagnose & Fix to clear temporary issues that may interfere with updates.
  3. Ensure Windows is fully updated and restart the PC before attempting the BIOS update again.
  4. Disconnect unnecessary external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) during the update.

Step 3: Free Temporary Storage Used by Updates

  1. Go to Start → Settings → System → Storage → Temporary Files.
  2. Select System created Windows Error Reporting files, Temporary files, and Delivery Optimization files, then click Remove files.
  3. Restart the PC to refresh the update environment.

Step 4: Run the BIOS Update Manually

  1. From the HP Support page, download the BIOS update file directly.
  2. Save it to your local drive (C:).
  3. Right‑click the file and select Run as administrator.
  4. Follow the on‑screen instructions, ensuring the PC is connected to power and not interrupted during the process.

By confirming the correct BIOS file, preparing the system, and running the update manually, the installation should complete successfully.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
