I have a  thunderbolt 4 docking station thats supports 98w charging, I have a thunderbolt 4 cable connected, but laptop 15-eb0056tx (has thunderbolt 3 port) won't work with the dock and associated screens unless its native power supply is also connected.

Sounds they are NOT compatible. Your machine has 2 USB-C ports, on its right it has

specs.png

HP indicates : port #6: Connects a USB device, provides high-speed data transfer, and charges small devices, even when the computer is off.
– and –
Connects a display device that has a USB Type-C connector, providing DisplayPort output. NOTE:The computer might also support a Thunderbolt docking station.

But HP does not say which one

Thanks for the reply,  Specs are below,  it should definitely be compatible with a docking station, as it has a thunderbolt 3 output, there's no clear reason as to why the dock doesn't work, I'm not expecting it to charge the laptop, just connect to the screens.
