Spectre X360 13-AE013DX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This is a 3-year-old Spectre X360. It went out for repair (3rd party Best Buy extended warranty) to replace a failing SSD and battery. Previously, the cooling fan only came on occasionally. Now the fan is continuously on, at full speed, on battery or AC power. The CPU is not overheating. I have checked with Core Temp that it is usually around 40 degrees C. I have updated to the latest BIOS (F.34). I have tried many different power settings, but nothing changes the fan being on at 100%. The noise is loud enough to be bothersome. There was a setting in BIOS "Fan always on", and I disabled it. I have heard of a program HP Command Center but have not been able to install it. I tried installing the program Notebook Fan Control, but it did not work. Is there anything else to try?

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you. It turned out that I did not have the latest version of Windows 10. I had version 1703, and Windows update would not update to 20H2. So I had to reinstall Windows. I checked that all the drivers were the latest versions. I checked that the BIOS was the latest version.

None of this changed the fact that the fan is always on, and quite audible. This is in contrast to my Lenovo laptops. In normal use, I do not hear the fans at all. I am starting to think that the fan on the HP laptop is SUPPOSED to always be on. This was not the case before the latest repair. Perhaps there is some change with the newest BIOS.

I installed HP Command Center. It shows 3 fan control options. None of them is "Quiet". I had read elsewhere that HP Command Center, when used on the Spectre X360,  had 4 fan control options, one of which was "Quiet." So something in the hardware/firmware/drivers seems to have changed.  I am not sure I can call the situation resolved. Maybe the fan always running is the new "normal."

All that aside, I am glad that I am now running the latest version of Windows 10. Not being able to make a major update to Windows using Windows Update is annoying.

I don't consider the problem resolved, as nothing has changed with respect to the fan always being on. It is loud enough to bother my wife, who is the user. It was not this way prior to the recent repair work to replace the SSD and battery.

The BIOS and OS have been updated to the latest versions.

I have disabled the "Fan always on" option in the BIOS.

Possibly the always-on fan is a "feature" of the new OS and BIOS. (I would consider it a bug in that case.) If so, my wife is not happy about it.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to back up your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows) You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
