Stephen many thanks for this workaround which worked on a new X360 with Swiss German keyboard. Well done.
It is however poor support on HP side as if you Google for "X360" and "0x0056 " you will find this same problem cropping up all over Europe.
Surely by now the manufacturer fix should be available in the HP support assistant.... especially seeing as HP have recognised the bug.

Hi Stephen,
One of my colleagues saw your response to my original post and i followed you instructions and finally got the \\\\\\\ working perfectly along with the ||||||.
I'm also in IT and had held off using any key mapping software in the hope that HP would someday fix the issue, probably at a bios level based on posts re the same issue on other HP models.
I installed latest bios today & still no fix (come on HP, do something!!!), Used your recommended solution and fixed in 3 mins.
thanks again for the suggestion. Terry

I had this issue when rebuilding from an RTM windows DVD; back slash key is not working.
There should be no need to create a custom key mapping, although that does work.
Just download the BOIS update from the drivers download section of HP support.
Install the BIOS update (even if it is the same version as you have), this process somehow updates the keyboard mapping.
I everytime i need to rebuild my laptop from scratch i need to repeat this process.

Hi All,
Just in case this happens to anyone else, i managed to lose the backslash mapping suggested by Stephen, probably after windows or hp software updates. Had to remap again and solution continues to work.
Regards, Terry

Hey, just to add onto this - I had this same issue with a refurbished HP Envy 13, and couldn't resolve after a full BIOS update. Thankfully Stephen's discoveries pointed me in the right direction, though slightly different - I ran SharpKeys and mapped the key (again showing as "Right Ctrl" to "Special: ISO extra key (00_56)".
