Hopefully someone can give me some words of advice, thanks in advance! The battery in my six year old laptop was almost totally fried and so I (somewhat foolishly as it turns out) ordered a replacement from Amazon. I installed it and the bios battery checks were good. It showed 92% charged and after using it for a while it STILL showed the same. I thought this was strange.
Then about two hours in the PC suddenly died, no shutdown just zap! I plugged in the power adapter and it now showed 'no battery detected'. After fooling with it for a while I shut it down and reinstalled the old battery, intending to return the new one. This is when the real problem began: Now the SSD was not recognized. I opened it back up, removed the SSD, cleaned the contacts, and restarted. Same issue.
So my question: Should I try to replace the SSD (512 MB, $65 on Amazon)? I'm currently trying to make a bootable USB drive using Win image restore (so far no luck).
As I wrote, any assistance would be appreciated!

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (Refer to the removable and sealed battery)
BIOS default:(do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)
- Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
- Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
- On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
- Press F10 to Save and Exit.
- Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
- Follow the prompts to restart your computer.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the help, but it's dead. I tried what you suggested anyway: It just won't recognize that a drive is installed. I tried a brand new Samsung 512gb ssd; same issue. I think the bad battery probably fried something on the motherboard.
I ordered an ssd enclosure and will try the original ssd in that- it may come up. In the meantime I'm running on a 2 tb usb drive that I was using for backup. It works but is SLOOOOOOWWWWW and has already lost some files.
So I went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered a new laptop. Ship date is April 15th; I can limp by until then with either this PC or my wife's. Lesson learned! Don't expect Amazon PC parts to work!
Thanks again for your response!

Thanks - I ordered a new PC a couple days ago, due in mid-April. I'm consigning this one to the junk heap as I am certain there was some motherboard damage caused by the bad battery. This had been a great PC, and if not for the battery issue I'm certain I would have been using it for several more years.
Again thank you for your assistance.
