HP Spectre x360

Over the last couple weeks I haven't been able to turn my Spectre x360 on and I'm not sure what to do about it. I've read through numerous forum posts but haven't found the specific error I'm facing so I thought I'd make a post of my own.

About 2 weeks ago I was plugging in my laptop since it was at low battery, but as I was plugging the charger into it, my laptop suddenly went black without any sort of warning or message. Several days ago I found out that while it was charging if I held down the power button, the "charging light" (idk what else to call it) would blink exactly three times. I'm not all that tech savvy so I have no idea what this means or what to do about it. Any advice would be appreciated!!

When you connect the power adapter are you able to power on the notebook?

When the power adapter is connected does the power led come on? Is it amber or white or blinking?

(This one is critical as the LED is a diagnostic which will let us know if the power adapter is ok.  Power LED on with solid color indicates power adapter is ok.)

Do you hear anything when you try to turn on the notebook?

The notebook does not power on at all or indicate that it's charging. I noticed that on pressing the power button though, the fan starts and stops in about a half second, indicating it's trying to start. The blinking light is white and flashes three times, the light doesn't come on any other way including when I plug the power adapter in.

It is difficult to help you if you do not identify your notebook. Just calling it a Spectre x360 is not sufficient for me to find the hardware characteristics and parts list for your notebook.

Look at the bottom of the notebook in the tiny letters and locate the ProdID. The ProdID is the first portion of the product number and will  providing that will enable me to acquire specific information on your HP notebook.

1) If the LED does not come on when the power adapter is plugged in, the adapter is likely have failed.

2) There could also be a fail point at the power connector on the left side of the notebook where the power adapter plugs in.

3) Be aware that your notebook also can use a power adapter that has a USB Type-C connector. It may be worthwhile to try one of those.

4) The charge circuit on the systemboard may have failed. That would require replacement of the system board.

Is your notebook still in warranty?

If the notebook is not in warranty, the  most likely failed component is the power adapter.

Using a Type-C power adapter will simplify things since you can plug the adapter into either USB type-C port on the right hand side of the notebook.

The HP power adapter that is compatible with your notebook has HP part number 904144-850

Hi, sorry for the late response, my ProdID is Z4Z38UA

The LED does not turn on at all when the power adapter is plugged in, but considering plugging it in is what caused the error in the first place, my guess is that there's an issue with the hardware. I'm just crossing my fingers that it's not as severe as damage to the system board, especially since I don't have a warranty for my laptop. Is it possible it could just be a battery issue? Thanks again!

Hi @bharris84 ,

You should consider inspecting the pin in the power adapter.

Does the connector that plugs into the notebook appear to have any damage or broken pins?

Try plugging it in and gently wiggling it. does the LED flicker?

I listed the possible failed parts of the notebook's power/charging system in order.

I would start with purchasing a compatible power adapter and plugging it in.

Using a power adapter that has a USB TYpe-C connector will bypass the possible failure issue at the DC in connector where the original power adapter plugs in. That is a good thing.
