Well, the -501 part has no Windows license key embedded in the BIOS chip so you would have to buy a copy of Windows if that is your OS of choice.
This is a newer motherboard with 5th generation processor instead of 4th gen. It is included in the Manual and would be a drop-in replacement.
You already gave yourself the Solution, so I will not ask.

On your recommendation I will go that route. Even though it is not the specific part number that I found, your expertise gives you the knowledge to tell me that this is an entirely compatible mother board. Thank you

This post is particularly addressed to Huffer and the recommendation he gave for a replacement motherboard. I need to tap into his knowledge to determine if the board recommended will work with my system. As I review the list of motherboards provided in the repair manual (I think) for the HP Envy 17T-K200 I find that maybe the recommendation is incorrect.
My system CPU is Intel i7-4720HQ. According to the repair manual that CPU needs to use 794984-501 or 794984-601
Following is taken from the Repair Manual for HP Envy 17 Notebook PC (part number C045823320 (Intel Core i7-4720HQ UMA (2.6 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.6 GHz), 1600 MHz/6 MB L3, quad core 47 W for use with Windows Standard Operating System)
According to the same manual the board which was recommended - part number 794985-601 is for use as follows:
Intel Core i5-5200U UMA FHD (2.2 GHz, SC turbo up to 2.7 GHz), 1600 MHz/3 MB L3, dual core 15 W for
use with Windows Professional Operating System
My fear is that the board that I received will not work with my CPU. That fear is based on at least a couple of specification points - for the board 794985-601 (1) It is a "dual Core CPU and (2) the CPU is rated at 15W. For the board 794984-601 the specifications show (1) Quad Core CPU and (2) CPU rated at 45 W. Those differences look to me to be incompatible.
It was unfortunate that the motherboard listing did not give more information about the specifications. Had that been the case, I would have immediately picked up the (Dual Core and opposed to Quad Core) and (15W as opposed to 45W).
Huffer, please come back and comment. I still do appreciate all of the points you have made.

You are not understanding that the motherboard will have the processor soldered to it. So when you buy the motherboard you also get the processor. Look at the picture of the motherboard....see, no processor socket. So no need to swap your processor to the new board. So no worries.

Thank you for that. No I did not understand that the processor came with the board. I have the board in my hands but did not realize that the CPU would be so very thin. So now I have removed the "broken board" . I clearly see that I need to transfer the fan-cooling system. The repair manual talks about "replacement thermal contact material". Is this required and where do I obtain it? None was included in the package with the replacement board. I also realize I need to add the memory chips.
I am still concerned about what the differences will be between the new board and the "broken board". I would guess that an Intel core i7- Quad Core is a more powerful CPU that the Intel core i5-Dual Core. Is this not true?
Further I learn from the Repair Manual that the board 794985-601 is supposed to be used for HP Envy 15 models while the computer I have is an HP Envy 17T-K200. My guess is that the 794985 board won't drive my Envy 17.
Thank you for you very kind assistance. It is sincerely appreciated. You have been extremely helpful.

Well the eBay auction says it will work in th 17t but Partsurfer and the Manual disagree. You need this one I guess:
Intel Core i7-5500U Discrete 840M 2 GB (2.4 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.0 GHz), 1600 MHz/4 MB L3, dual core 15 W for use with Windows Standard Operating System 790959-501
The 794985-601 and this one sure look the same but this one would be safe. It is the version with the i7-5500U which yes, will be faster than an i5.

Thanks Huffer. The price they show for that board causes me to think that it might be a good idea to send it to HP and get a new board of the right part number AND something of a warranty. The $102 I paid for the board I got seemed pretty over priced to me for a used board. I've written to the seller and requested that either the board be replaced with the correct part number or my money refunded.
I very much appreciate all that you've told me.
