Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Windows 10 does not acknowledge the presence of the HP Synaptics touchpad despite the fact that the touchpad works and that the Synaptics software is present.

Windows 10 blocks the installation of the Synaptics driver and reports that the best driver is already installed.

Synaptics driver installation file does not install the driver and reports that the Synaptic driver is already installed. But the Synaptics touchpad does not appear in the list of devices, just a generic touchpad.

The Windows generic touchpad driver reports the error "set user settings to driver failed" on start and after starting. This implies there is a problem with the windows generic touchpad driver.

Furthermore, the problem has appeared only in the past month which means that a Windows update was the cause.

Synaptics recommends installing drivers from the computer manufacturer's web site which implies that drivers might be affected by the computer manufacturer's hardware and firmware.

Windows uses a generic HID compliant driver which is dated 06/21/2006.

The Synaptics driver is Version: 19.3.31.31 Date: 08-16-2017but windows blocks it's installation.

The windows generic touchpad drivers does not have the features that Synaptics provides.

The problem was solved by the following:

First verify that Synaptics clickpad driver installation software is present on your C: drive "C:\SWsetup\SP81891\Setup.exe with the Synaptics icon.

1. Open windows 10 apps and features

2. locate Synaptics clickpad driver

3. Uninstall

4. Find location C:\SWsetup\SP81891

5, execute setup.exe which takes more than a few minutes to install.

Problem is then fixed and the Synaptics touchpad appears in the device manager under mice and other pointing devices and is absent from Human Interface Devices.
