The camera does not work in the Camera app, zoom, or hangouts.  I have tried power washing several times but it still does not work.  The privacy permissions is open to allow use of the camera but it still does not work

Hi @nct1215,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

if your HP 14" Chromebook’s camera isn’t working in any app, even after a Powerwash, that suggests it's likely a hardware issue or deep-level system permission problem.

Please try the steps shared below and let me know if this helps.

1. Try the built-in Camera app

  • Open the Camera app from the launcher.
  • Does it show an error like "Camera unavailable" or just a black screen?
    • If it does, → likely a hardware issue.
    • If it opens but doesn’t work in other apps (e.g., Zoom, Meet) → likely permissions.

2. Check Permissions

  • Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings.
  • Under Permissions, go to Camera.
  • Make sure the correct camera is selected and that no apps are blocked.
  • Try toggling Ask before accessing (recommended) on/off.

3. Try Guest Mode

  • Log out.
  • Select Browse as Guest on the login screen.
  • Open the Camera app — if it still doesn’t work, it’s not a user profile issue.

4. Diagnostics App

  • Press Search + Esc and type Diagnostics.
  • Run the Camera test if available — does it detect the camera?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
