Model: HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec0103AX
Hello,
I’m having an issue with my laptop where the performance drops significantly whenever I plug in the charger, even when the system is idle or under light use. The thermal throttling indicators go very high, but the CPU temperature remains normal (around 60°C or below).
Here’s what I’ve already tried:
- Updated the BIOS to the latest version
- Reapplied thermal paste to the CPU
- Tested running with the battery unplugged (same issue)
- Used a different HP charger (from a Victus laptop, 200W) — same result
I bought it from reseller and I believe was scammed by the seller, as they claimed there were no issues, but I noticed this problem only after testing the laptop during charging and gaming. I need this laptop urgently for my upcoming programming classes starting in July.
My Question:
- What could be the most likely cause of this issue?
- Is it possible that this is caused by a faulty VRM or motherboard component?
- How much would it typically cost to have this checked or repaired?
I'm from Philippines
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

Hi @Jztinn,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding thermal throttling on the HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Check Power Settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Ensure the power plan is set to High Performance.
- Verify that the CPU performance settings are set to maximum when plugged in.
Performance Mode:
- Use the OMEN Gaming Hub to set the laptop to Performance Mode. This can help balance the performance and manage thermal conditions better.
- Check the System Vitals tab in the OMEN Gaming Hub to monitor CPU and GPU performance and temperatures in real time.
Clean and Maintain:
- Clean the vents and fans regularly to ensure proper airflow.
- Verify there are no obstructions blocking the airflow around your laptop.
Update Drivers and BIOS:
- Ensure all system drivers are up-to-date using HP Support Assistant.
- Re-check if you are on the latest BIOS version available from the HP support website.
Check Environmental Conditions:
- Ensure the ambient room temperature is not too high, which can contribute to thermal throttling.
- Position the laptop in a well-ventilated area and consider using a cooling pad.
I hope this helps.
