I thought I should post this because I figured it out and I'd like to save people the trouble.

This is a hardware problem. Don't waste your time resetting and stuff. The glue that holds the lens onto the camera comes loose. I found this out after I broke my screen and had to replace it. Unfortunately if this happens you should probably send it in for warranty work, although if your warrantee has run out, the unit is not difficult to service.  No glue. A guitar pick behind the plastic bezel around the screen pops the screen off without too much difficulty.
