Hello everyone,
Ater every BIOS update on my Dragonfly G4 laptop I get the following error message:
Firmware update
Intel(R) Thunderbolt Retimer firmware update failed
Intel(R) Thunderbolt Retimer_1 FW
CreateRetimerDevInstance or read Retimer NVM version failed
Does anyone know this error message? And does anyone have an idea what it means or how to stop it?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
Malte

Hi @mumba445
Can you rephrase "After every BIOS update "?
It isn't really clear as to what you mean.
Does that mean after every attempt with the very same BIOS update or each time that the BIOS has been updated with a more recent version each time?
The error message you provided would lead me to ask if you are having a problem with Thunderbolt port use.
Are you attempting to update the BIOS to version 01.06.03 Rev.A dated Aug 30, 2024?
Which build of Windows 11 is installed in your laptop?

Hi, thanks for your answer. Win11 23H2 is installed. The BIOS is up to date. The error message appears after every update to a new BIOS version. I just tried it: The right Thunderbolt port doesn't seem to be working properly. Charging works but connecting an external device doesn't work...

Was there any device plugged into the laptop besides the power adapter when you tried updating the BIOS and saw the error message below that you referred to?
That is a known cause which prevents the updating of the Intel(R) Thunderbolt Retimer firmware.
"Firmware update
Intel(R) Thunderbolt Retimer firmware update failed
Intel(R) Thunderbolt Retimer_1 FW
CreateRetimerDevInstance or read Retimer NVM version failed"
Have you installed the Seamless firmware update service software package?
Which processor is installed in your laptop's system board?
Have you used the HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI utility to test the USB ports in your laptop?
Power on and immediately tap the F2 key to invoke the Diagnostic utility.
The Component test section has a test for the ports.
Let us know what the test results were.
What device have you plugged into the Thunderbolt port that is not operating as expected?
"connecting an external device doesn't work" Does that mean any device, including USB flashdrives?
Have you entered the BIOS to see if there is an option in the onboard devices to enable/disable the Thunderbolt controller?
If there is, ensure that it is enabled.
The Raptor Lake chipset does not have a Thunderbolt controller driver requirement because it is supplied by the operating system.
It may be a good plan to update all of the chipset drivers for Windows 11 build 23H2 from the HP driver download web document. That may resolve the issue you are having. A hyperlink to the web document is below
