Laptop is a Pavilion 15-CS1053-OD. It has a 256GB hard drive and has been used for last six months. I wanted to upgrade hard drive to to 500GB SSD drive. I watched video on YouTube on how to take laptop apart and it all worked exactly as shown. The problem is everything I can find shows the hard drive next to the battery. When I took the laptop apart there is a hole where the hard drive is shown and there is a jack labeled HDD but there is no wire coming out of the jack. I have looked the laptop over and can see nothing that looks like a hard drive. At this point, I have no idea how to proceed.

Hi:
Your notebook did not come with a 2.5" hard drive.
It came with a M.2 2280 solid state drive.

What you need to look for is something that looks like this...this is the actual SSD your PC has now according to the parts list.
HP L25327-001 - SSD 256GB 2280 M2 SATA3 TLC (cpumedics.com)
The service manual indicates your notebook's M.2 slot can take both a SATA or NVMe SSD.
NVMe drives provide faster read/write speeds than SATA ones do.

Maintenance guide states that you need to remove the battery which suggests that the drive is under the battery.

Hi, @Repairatrooper
The drive is not under the battery.
It is SOP to remove the battery to prevent the electrical current from frying the computer components.
It is just going to be lying in plain sight in the M.2 slot on the motherboard.

@Paul_Tikkanen is correct on battery removal, good practice but in this case does not block access. However the maintenance guide my partner website linked to shows that there is an M2 slot and a slot for a standard 2.5 inch harddrive. It is possible that your unit may have an SSD drive and an optane module. Either way, they are right next to each other as you can see in this picture
