I have the touchpad turned on and the box to leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected unchecked. I take that to mean that when a mouse is connected, the touchpad will turn off, and that when the mouse is disconnected, the touchpad turns back on. That doesn't happen. I have to have the "leave touchpad on" box checked for the touchpad to ever work.
Is this just a bug? If not, what's the point of the setting if the touchpad has to be set to be on whether using a mouse or not?
And as a side question, I've seen instructions for turning the touchpad on by using the proper function key or by tapping the top left corner of the touchpad. There is no function key for it on this computer, and tapping the corner of the pad does nothing. Is there a shortcut for turning it off and on?

Here's a video from HP Support about troubleshooting touchpads in Win11:

I ran the tests and nothing changed. But I did discover a problem. When it says "Leave touchpad on when mouse is connected," it really means "connected," not just turned off. Even with the mouse turned off, the computer still recognizes the USB adapter as specifically a mouse adapter.
In order to use this option, then, it appears that I have to remove the adapter until I want to use the mouse. It's a mini adapter, so I was accustomed to leaving it in all the time. Most of the time I like to have both the mouse and the touchpad available. It's when I type extensively that I need the touchpad off. A keyboard shortcut would be nice so I didn't have to go into the settings to turn it on and off. This model doesn't have a function key option to turn the touchpad on and off.

I created a shortcut for the desktop using the command ms-settings:devices-touchpad to get me to that settings page quickly.
I wonder why HP decided to remove touchpad on/off from the function keys. I wish they hadn't.
