I have a Chromebook whose touchpad doesn't work at all. It was a gradual thing. I tried all the common remedies - drumming, hitting reset button, on/off, but to no avail. Then tried a hard reset, after which a new snag developed - it no longer turns on automatically when the lid is opened. Anyone have a tried-and-true remedy?

@Marty613, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing issues with your HP Chromebook x360 - 14-da0012dx, where the touchpad has stopped working and the device no longer powers on automatically when the lid is opened, even after a hard reset. Let's work through this step-by-step.
Check Touchpad Settings in Chrome OS
- Click the clock in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
- Select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Go to Device > Touchpad.
- Ensure the touchpad is enabled and adjust sensitivity settings if needed.
Perform a Hardware Diagnostic
HP Chromebooks support hardware diagnostics via the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool:
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold the Esc + Refresh keys, then press the Power button.
- Release all keys when the HP logo appears.
- Use the diagnostics menu to test the touchpad.
If the touchpad test fails, it may indicate a hardware issue.
Power Reset (Hard Reset)
Since you've already tried a hard reset, please ensure it was done correctly:
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold the Refresh + Power buttons for 10 seconds.
- Release both keys and allow the Chromebook to restart.
This clears temporary memory and can resolve many hardware glitches.
Check Lid Open Behavior
The Chromebook should power on when the lid is opened. If it no longer does:
- Go to chrome://flags in the Chrome browser.
- Search for "Lid Open Power On".
- If available, set it to Enabled and restart the device.
Update Chrome OS
- Go to Settings > About Chrome OS.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install any available updates and restart.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
