HP Notebook - 15-ay039wm (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop is failing to boot, goes to a black screen.  I have consulted the troubleshooting topics on the support pages, and, after trying several of the suggested solutions on that page, have had no success yet in reviving it.  From the software support page I see that my BIOS is several versions old, so I am attempting to update it in my next attempt to revive the laptop.  However, after creating the USB drive with the required files i see that my system board ID isn't one of the available choices.  My board is 81EB, but the list on my drive is:  081EC, 081 ED, 081EF, 081F2, and 081F3.  Is one of these compatible with my current board, or do I need to try to download a different BIOS update to get the matching board files?  All help is appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's do a BIOS rollback:

  1. Turn off the computer, and then connect the power cord.

  2. Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds.

Keyboard highlighting the key presses for BIOS recovery

  3. Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.

The HP BIOS Update screen displays and the recovery begins automatically.

Once done, the Computer will restart and you will get back to your normal Windows screen, if not, download the BIOS update: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-15-ay000-notebook-pc-series/10862300/m... and then from this document: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833, follow the steps to Create a USB recovery drive.

Let me know if this helps.
