HP ENVY x360 M6 (W2K44UA)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Seems to be a lot of confusion on the USB-C compatabilty. Has anyone identifed (verified) an HP or  3rd party docking solution that works for this model? Really interested in the DisplayPort Alternative Mode capability.

@Vadar007

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Riddle_Decipher is at your service.

As I understand you need information on using the USB Type-C,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you check with the USB Type C compatibility list on HP devices?

If you haven't, here's what you need to know:

USB Type-C video modes (Alternate mode): USB Type-C ports support adapters that can output different types of video such as HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort, all from one USB Type-C port on your computer or device.

USB Type-C power delivery (USB PD): USB Type-C power delivery is bi-directional, so a device can either send or receive power. This power can be transferred at the same time the device is transmitting data across the connection.

For more information about USB Type-C, see http://www.usb.org/developers/usbtypec/ (in English).

Informative but doesn't really answer my question. There are a number of 3rd party and even HP USB-C dock solutions out there. Based on on-going threads, product reviews and general Googling, it is apparent that certain HP series laptops are very picky about what works and doesn't from a USB-C connectivity solution, e.g. the HP Specte has a litany of threads and reviews calling out their lack of compatibility with HP and 3rd party USB-C docking solutions. Instead of trying to buy/test/return a bunch of USB-C docking products until I find one that works with the HP ENVY x360...I am querying if anyone has identified something that has proven to work from real world application.

@Vadar007

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

The answer to your question is mentioned on the article I shared earlier,

Although, if you need specific information than I must say that USB Type-C has been tested to work with HP Devices that are shipped with the USB Thunderbolt support.

I hope that answers your question.

To confirm, the HP Envy x360 M6 (m6-aq105dx) USB C port is not Thunderbolt enabled/capable, right? Can't find any documentation saying it is.

@Vadar007

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I'm afraid the USB thunderbolt port isn't a part of your model,

And HP hasn't tested or approved any of the USB Type-C port to work without the thunderbolt port on an HP device,

You may attempt to use it at your own discretion.

Ok, let's forgo the USB-C approach. I should be able to use the standard USB 3.0 port to do port replication with a standard USB 3.0 port replicator, correct?

@Vadar007

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

You should be able to use port replicators, normally they shouldn't have compatibility issues as such,

however, HP doesn't recommend or support usage of port replicators as they draw or require a lot of power for all the ports to work, hence this is also something you could try at your own discretion.

Keep me posted,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

So I have this same model... And this HP Rep really Made this more complicated than it had to be...

Straight answer: USB-C port is basically useles sin this model unles syour planning on hooking up a cell phone for storage media via adapters.

It does not accept power or thunderbolt connections.

HOWEVER, the standard USB 3 connector DOES work with HP's USB C Docking station. The docking station comes with a USB C to USB 3 Adapter. Although you will need to plug your normal power cable in but at least its only that ONE USB and Power cable to your laptop. I can confirm it supports a external display using this method either via HDMI or DVI.

Here is a link to the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/HP-Laptops-DisplayPort-USB-C-Ethernet/dp/B01MTOCLUQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=15...

I Really should have paid attention to the port saying Thunderbolt.

After a stressful week of research and testing I finally found an option that works, is more affordable, and can be picked up at your local Bestbuy.

Drum roll please! It’s is the J5Create (JUD380). Cost me about $75 at Best Buy. Once you buy it MAKE SURE you download and install the driver from their website. Just like that, you’re up and running with dual monitors! I believe the key is the driver. With that said, I think it’s possible that you can get a cheaper J5 Create adapter model along with their driver for it and get the same results. I haven’t tested any of the other ones with the driver but my local Best Buy does allow you to try before you buy, as long as the adapter you use is an “open box” item. If it isn’t “open box”, you have to buy it, try it(with the driver installed), and return it right then if it doesn’t work.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/j5create-usb-3-0-mini-docking-station-silver/5901250.p?skuId=5901250

Two things to know though:

1) With this model of Evny x360 M6, you have to use the USB 3.0 on the LEFT side of the laptop. The one on the right doesn’t work. It only gives an error message. Not sure why.

2) The USB ports on the JUD380 adapter will not work. You will get an error message each time you plug something in to it. Not sure why.

If this helped you and you’re feeling extra appreciative, my cash app is $Kdavis232

Take care!
