Pavilion dv6500
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'd like to upgrade my Pavilion dv6500 dv6695el to 4GB ram. I've seen in the Internet BIOS version would need to update from F.23 (as-is) to F.33. This update would allow to install Win10 64bit OS. I'd need the right link where to download the BIOS F.33 from.

In alternative: do you know any alternative solution my Pavilion can use 4 GB ?

Thx for anyone's co-operation.

Roberto

Yes you have proven its a bad module. 5300 is the "speed" of the memory. Memory is a little technical but there are two ways to express memory speed. PC2-5300 is the same as DDR2-667. I think you could safely order a replacement of the bad Komputerbay DDR2-800. As I said it usually will downclock. I think its a case of a defective module not an imcompatible one. A good one would be fine. If you don't want to do that order 2 x 2 of DDR2-667 SO-DIMM

You do not need to update the BIOS to have 4 gigs of memory. Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

All BIOS versions support up to 2 x 2 DDR2-667 SO-DIMM.

Win10 64 bit will be a challenge. Video and wifi drivers will be hard to find. Windows 7 is the optimum OS for that computer.

Hi,

I did install 2 x 2GB, but my bios version F.23 detects only 2 GB. So, this apparently contradicts your statement. I did find in the Internet F.33 bios version would solve the issue for my Pavilion, but I don't know where to download it.

Is there something I have to set in my bios F.23 to make it detect 4 GB?

I'm using Win10 32 bit, I'd like to update to 64 bit, being Win7 in Sys-out.

Thx in advance for your help and patience.

Tell us exactly what memory you are using. You can see the failure to detect all 4 gigs when the memory is not compatible.

With 32 bit Windows the most memory you can use is around 3.2 gigs.

Hi Huffer

sorry to reply you so late.

I did install 2 modules 2GB PC2 6400 DDR2 800 NonECC LD Unbuffered sold me by Komputer Bay through Amazon, and declared HP Pavilion dv6500 compatible.

Could one of the 2 modules be flawed ?

Thx again for your support.

Updating my previous post:

I have removed one of the 2 modules (then, I'm running with just 2 GB) and, as you can see, my Pavilion is running in Win10 32bit.

So, module type installed look compatible...

Looking forward to your gentle reply.

New update: in order to check if the second module is flawed, I did remove the first and replace it with the second. The second works fine, I'm actually using it.

So, I can actually run with 2 GB, any module has been installed in the slot closer to the motherboard (i.e. in the most inner one).

Always gentle. The laptop is not rated for DDR2-800 it uses DDR2-667. Most of the time DDR2-800 will downclock OK but sometimes on off brands like Komputerbay you will have problems running 2 modules together at the same time. You might have a bad slot...try each module in each slot alone and see how it all works.

Hi,

I'll do the test. But, are you saying that Amazon/Komputerbay did declare a compatibility not true? I mean: sounds they declare these modules have the right frequency for my pavilion whilst, instead, they had to sell me the ones at 667 Mhz, not the ones I did purchase...

Letting you know about the test you did suggest.

Yes if amazon said it was compatible I am not going to accept that. Crucial also occasionally suggests a wrong module. They try to sell what they have more of. DDR2-800 is much more common than DDR2-667. If your laptop is running right and you use the recommended parts it will run 4 gigs of RAM with any level of the BIOS.
