OMEN by HP - 17-w295nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I tried updating the onboard Intel HD 3060 graphics driver with a driver from Intel because the latest driver from HP is dated 2017. However, I get an error that the existing driver is locked to the laptop hardware by HP. How can I update my driver??

You're very welcome.

I don't believe that is possible either because the drivers were custom designed to work with the HP Nvidia/Intel switchable graphics.

It would be an interesting experiment to update both the drivers, but you would have to be willing to then uninstall the updated drivers and reinstall the original ones if things didn't work out.

I love to experiment, but if you have a lot of added files and programs and you had to resort to a factory reset to correct any issues the updated drivers may cause, you would be have to be willing to do that too.

Or you can make a system image of your current drive's configuration with the free macrium reflect utility and have it make the bootable recovery program you use to access the system image you store on a portable hard drive or USB flash drive.

Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

You want the software listed on the left side of the page under the 'Backup at Home' section.

Please let us know the results if you try it.

Hi:

Unfortunately, that would not be possible since your notebook has the Nvidia/Intel switchable graphics adapters.

You can only use the latest driver from Intel on PC's that only have the onboard Intel HD graphics.

Were you to manage updating the Intel driver to the latest version, it will cause the switchable graphics to quit working properly.

We found this out after folks used my knowledge base article to manually update the Intel graphics driver to the latest version on notebooks with the switchable graphics.

You can read the second comment posted below the article.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is it possible to update the NVIDIA drivers then? HP also only has outdated drivers for that one too.

I figured that. Thanks for confirming. The reason I wanted to update the drivers is that I upgraded Adobe Lightroom and now I get an error that the Intel driver is outdated. I just talked with Adobe and they said I could change the nvidia properties to always use that gc. I'm going to try that. If I still have trouble with drivers, I think its time to get a new laptop.   😉

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.
