If a laptop is sold with the option to upgrade to a backlit keyboard, but you don't purchase it at the time, does the system board of that PC equipped with option to be upgraded later or is it shipped with a non-upradeable board? I forgot to add the backlight option when I ordered. It's too late to change my order as its already on its way. Am I better off exchanging it?

It is a CTO machine, you MAY BE able to have motherboard with connectors for a backlit keyboard. But the chance is 50/50. It may cost you heaps now for just getting a backlit keyboard.
Please check where you order your machine.
