Upgrade RAM, BIOS settings

Hi

I have an old HP Probook 455 G2 which is working a bit sluggish. I've replaced the hard disk with ac Crucial MX500 SSD. I would also like to upgrade the RAM. I have 2 original 4GB DDR3 chips from an older HP Pavilion Touchbook which I switched with the single chip in my Probook, but when I start up I don't have extra available RAM.

There is no problem with the chips as they both work in the Pavilion, and they each work individually when just one is in the laptop.

I have tried all the other suggestions from the forum and Google search, such as update BIOS, check page file setting, and ensure max RAM is unchecked is MSConfig.

One suggestion I have seen on many forums is to change the BIOS/CMOS settings to stop the RAM being automatically assigned to the GPU or other hardware. Unlike the computers discussed in most forums the HP BIOS seems to be very minimal and I cannot find any of the settings suggested.

If anybody could reply with a method how to change these settings, or any other suggestions which could solve the problem I would greatly appreciate it.

We need to know exactly what RAM you installed. This laptop takes DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM so if you installed older slower memory it is going to cause compatibility issues.

The RAM I installed is DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM. I have tried each chip individually and they do work, the problem is when I have both together in the Probook. So it is definitely not a compatability issue.

That does not necessarily follow. Compatibility can cause the laptop not to accept two modules. Can we have the actual type of memory you installed? Brand and part number?

Kind of what I thought. 1.5 volt is not DDR3L. That is supposed to be 1.35 volt. The memory you have installed is not the recommended type.

It seems you are correct, although it is interesting one chip always works even though the voltage is too high.

Could you also tell me, in my Probook the SD card reader (which is on the front) no longer works, is there a way to replace it using the card reader from my Pavilion which is on the side?

No I have the same issue on a Stream I have. The card reader is soldered to the motherboard and not practically replaceable.
