Hi @danterran
Yes, you can upgrade to a 1TB 2.5" Samsung 860 pro without any problem. You could also choose the 860evo which will be much cheaper and have similar speeds. It will improve the everyday performance of the PC a lot.
On page 47 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03733656
You will need to install the OS on the SSD either by using HP recovery disks, migrating an image (using software such as Samsung Magician available on their site) or by downloading the media creation tool from Microsoft (before replacing drive), running and creating a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. Then use this pendrive to perform a clean install of the OS on the SSD.

Constraint:
no NVMe SSD compatibility.
viable upgrade must be mSATA SSD type for the mSATA slot.
Samsung 850 EVO in 2.5" SATA or mSATA format will also work.
https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/850evo/
The Samsung SSD 860 Pro in 2.5" SATA-3 format should work as well.
You will need to replace your installed legacy SATA hard disk with it
See the following search I did in Google for mSATA SSD products

Hi,
I'd like to upgrade to SSD 860 PRO SATA III 2,5 of 1To. I am not looking for any SSD NVMEw nor mSATA.
If it applies having no constraint , I'd like to start from scratch installing new Windows 10 Pro and how to replace the legacy DATA hard disk.
Cheers,
Dante

It appears that you have not read my reply.
All I can do is try to lead you to information that applies to your notebook's hardware configuration.
The source for the information I postedd is an HP Maintenence & Service guide which gives SSD compatibility information.
