Hello I was wondering what ram I would need to get to upgrade my Hp pavilion 14-bf0xx. Is it possible to put two 16gb ram sticks into this? Also would I need to clone the existing ram stick? I know nothing about ram. I am an astrophotographer and processing my videos is painfully slow. It takes hours.  I am hoping that more ram will help speed this up?

Thank you

Neil

You're very welcome.

That is correct.  The report indicates the total memory over both slots.

I'd go with two of these:

Crucial 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT2K16G4SFD824A | Crucial UK

Hi, Neil:

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the notebook will support 2 x 8 GB of memory if it has an Intel core processor.

HP Pavilion 14 Laptop PC Maintenance and Service GuideIMPORTANT! This document is intended for HP au...

If your notebook has an Intel 8th generation core processor, it may be possible that it can support 2 x 16 GB of memory.

If you want to see if your notebook can support more than 2 x 8 GB of memory, you can run this command to find out:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

Thank you very much. My laptop is an I7. One last thing. As my laptop has 8GB of ram in it, that would mean I would only need to get one extra 8GB stick? Would this speed up my laptop much? Also I know when I replaced my SSD drive to a 2T drive I had to clone my old SSD. Its probably a silly question but is that necessary if I replaced all the ram? Thank you.

You're very welcome, Neil.

Yes, you would only need to add another 8 GB memory chip if your specific notebook came with 1 x 8 GB of memory.

This would be the memory chip I recommend for your notebook:

Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT8G4SFS824A | Crucial UK

Subjectively you can expect a decent increase in performance for two reasons:

The obvious reason being doubling the memory from 8 GB to 16 GB.

The not so obvious reason is by adding a second 8 GB memory chip you change the way the memory runs from single channel to dual channel.

This video will provide a some information on that aspect:

Single Channel vs Dual Channel Memory - Laptop Gaming and CPU Benchmarks (youtube.com)

Memory is plug and play.

You don't need to do anything but install the second memory chip and fire up the notebook.

Thats great. I have done the calculation you suggested and when I divide the KB number by the number you provided. I get 32. So I guess the motherboard can take 2 16GB sticks? Can you recommend the two 16GB chips I will need to get? Thank you again.
