Upgrade question

My wife has an HP 15 laptop that I downloaded some video editing software to. Obviously the laptop is not built to run this software because it loads and runs at a snails pace. I was wondering if anybody would have any upgrade suggestions or to tell me if it is possible to put a little money into this laptop to make it run the software a little faster. My other option would be to buy her a new laptop but this one is only a year or so old so if I can get away with upgrading it that would be great.
