Exactly: 2 things: 1. May not be able to boot from and use external disk as a system or bootdisk; and 2. Even if you could it is not a fair test as running the OS from an external drive will perform slower and you won't get a true picture of how the OS would run for you. No need to test in my opinion; Windows 10 will work fine.

@Huffer has a very good point regarding the external drive speed.
If you were able to install W10 on a portable hard drive, the performance will be considerably slower via a USB3 port, than from the internal SATA 3 connection the existing SSD is currently connected to.
This may lead you to the false conclusion that W10 64 bit makes your PC run slow, and W10 x64 in and of itself, wouldn't have been the cause of such a situation.
