OMEN by HP 875-1000 Obelisk Desktop PC (3VH40AV)

Dear Community

I plan to buy the Meta Quest 3 and use it for flight simulation mainly, like MS Flight Simulator 2020, digital combat simulation from eagle dynamic and maybe, but this is optional, the flight simulator 2024.

Now my question, can I do so with my current setup( I added 16gb of ram, so I have 32gb):

OMEN 875-0664NZ/17-8700/16G/2T+256G

Prozessor

Intel® Core™ 7-8700

Prozessor

Grafikkarte

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070

Intel® UHD Graphics

Can I expect min 60fps? If not, what upgrade should I do to get the most out of my buck?

Hi @adrian209,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your current setup should be capable of running flight simulators like MS Flight Simulator 2020 and DCS World reasonably well, but achieving a consistent 60 FPS might require some tweaks and adjustments. Here’s a breakdown of your setup in relation to your VR and flight simulation goals:

Current Specifications:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700
  • RAM: 32GB
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
  • Storage: 2TB HDD + 256GB SSD

Performance Expectations:

MS Flight Simulator 2020:

  • Minimum Requirements: A GTX 970 or RX 590, which is lower than your RTX 2070.
  • Recommended Requirements: An RTX 2080 or RTX 3070 for better performance.
  • Performance: Your RTX 2070 should handle MS Flight Simulator 2020, but achieving a stable 60 FPS might be challenging at higher settings. You may need to lower settings for smoother performance.

DCS World:

  • Minimum Requirements: Similar to MS Flight Simulator 2020, but generally, it’s less demanding.
  • Recommended Requirements: Similar to MS Flight Simulator 2020, with newer GPUs providing better performance.
  • Performance: Your setup should perform adequately, though higher settings might still push the limits.

Flight Simulator 2024:

  • Minimum Requirements: Similar to or slightly higher than MS Flight Simulator 2020, depending on the enhancements and new features.
  • Performance: Similar to MS Flight Simulator 2020, your RTX 2070 will be adequate but might need settings adjustments.

Optimizing Your Setup:

Graphics Settings:

  • Adjust in-game graphics settings to achieve a balance between quality and performance.
  • Lower settings such as shadows, reflections, and terrain details can help increase FPS.

VR Performance:

  • VR can be more demanding than traditional displays. Consider reducing settings further to maintain a smooth experience.
  • Ensure your VR setup is optimized within the VR software settings.

Possible Upgrades:

Graphics Card:

  • Upgrade Suggestion: Consider upgrading to a newer GPU, such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 or RTX 4070, which will provide a significant performance boost and handle VR and demanding simulations better.
  • Impact: Higher FPS and better performance at higher settings.

Hi Rachek571

Thank you for your answer.

I used my computer with DCS and Flight Simulator 2020 with a Quest2 for several years.

I therefore know it works with VR.

My question is, will it work as good if I buy and use the Quest 3. In %, how much will the fps drop?

If the drop is important, what graphic card can I install instead of current 2070 without changing the cooler and power supply?

Hi @adrian209

Thank you for your response,Transitioning from the Oculus Quest 2 to the Quest 3 for use with DCS World and Flight Simulator 2020 involves considerations about performance, especially regarding frame rates (fps) and potential upgrades for your PC setup. Here’s an overview to address your questions:

  • 1. Performance Impact with Oculus Quest 3:
  • Frame Rate (fps): The Oculus Quest 3 is expected to have improved display capabilities, potentially supporting higher resolutions and refresh rates compared to the Quest 2. This can result in higher graphical demands on your PC when using VR applications.
  • Performance Comparison: While specific performance metrics like fps drop can vary based on individual system configurations and software optimizations, it’s generally expected that newer VR headsets with higher resolutions and refresh rates may require more graphical processing power.
  • 2. Upgrading Graphics Card (GPU):
  • Current GPU (RTX 2070): The RTX 2070 is a capable GPU for VR gaming, but depending on the settings and desired fps, you might experience some performance limitations with newer VR headsets like the Quest 3.
  • Recommendation for GPU Upgrade: If you find that your current GPU is struggling to maintain desired performance levels with the Quest 3, consider upgrading to a more powerful GPU. Here are a few considerations:
  • GPU Compatibility: Ensure that the GPU you choose is physically compatible with your PC case and does not exceed the power supply (PSU) capacity.
  • No Need to Change Cooler/PSU: Look for GPUs that have similar power requirements as your current RTX 2070 to avoid the need for a PSU upgrade. Most GPUs in the same performance range should fit this requirement.
  • GPU Options: Consider GPUs like the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, or AMD equivalents like the RX 6700 XT or RX 6800. These GPUs offer significant performance boosts over the RTX 2070 and are well-suited for VR gaming.
  • 3. General Recommendations:
  • Monitor System Performance: Use monitoring tools like MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z to monitor GPU usage, temperatures, and frame rates while using VR applications. This can help identify if and when an upgrade is necessary.
  • Check VR Requirements: Always refer to the specific VR headset and game requirements for optimal performance settings. Adjusting in-game graphics settings can also help optimize performance.
  • Consult Reviews and Benchmarks: Before purchasing a new GPU, check reviews and benchmarks to ensure it meets your performance expectations for VR gaming with the Oculus Quest 3.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
