Upgrading my laptop questions
12-10-2020 06:01 AM - edited 12-10-2020 06:02 AM

Hi,
I own my HP laptop for about 2 years now. I would like to upgrade my RAM and add more storage.
I would like to know if my laptop is compatible:
1) Upgrading ram to 2x 8GB DDR4 2666MHz | 2 x 8GB DDR4 3200 MHz
2) Adding a SSD, If so what SSD is preferred?
Current PC specs:
Intel i5-7th Gen
4GB SODIMM RAM 2133 MHz
1TB HDD

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
The memory upgrade info can be found in chapter 1.
The 12 GB maximum amount of memory you can install that is listed in the manual is incorrect.
You can install 8 GB of memory in both slots.
Any memory that you install that is faster than 2133 MHz is only going to run at 2133 MHz, which is the fastest speed your notebook's processor can run the memory at.
If your notebook has a M.2 slot as the manual indicates, it only supports SATA M.2 SSD's, not NVMe.

Hi,
You can install 16GB of DDR4 RAM (2x8GB). The RAM will run at 2133MHz. So even if you install 3000MHz RAM, it will run at 2133MHz.
Ex:

You can add an M2 SATA3 SSD to the machine or you could replace the Hard Drive with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD. You can get of your desired capacity and brand.
Something like the Samsung 860 Evo would be great.

Hope it helps,
