I have a hp laptop with windows 12, Ryzen 5 with AMD Radeon graphics. It was purchased around 2 years ago. 2 days back, I think some some rainwater went inside one of the USB ports. It is not working and the laptop is continuously giving notifications and clicking sounds. It shows an error message saying the last USB device connected malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it. When the laptop is turned on, it makes the noise of a USB connecting and disconnecting even though there is nothing connected to either USB port. I tried to disable that USB port from the device manager but it also disabled the bluetooth so I had to enable it again. A local service provider opened the laptop and said that it might be a short circuit inside but there is no rust inside.

Could you tell what has happened to the laptop and what should I do in such a case? Also tell me the prices of whatever repair you suggest.

@Sneha02, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding USB Port Issues on Your HP Laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Given the situation with potential water exposure to your USB port and the subsequent issues you're experiencing, here are some steps you can follow to address the problem:

Immediate Action:

  • Power Off: Immediately power off your laptop and disconnect it from any power source. Water and electricity can cause further damage to the internal components.
  • Dry Out: Ensure the affected USB port is thoroughly dried out. You can use a fan or a hairdryer on the cool setting to help speed up the drying process.

Reset and Test the USB Port:

  • Unplug and Restart: Unplug any connected USB device and restart your laptop. Allow several minutes between powering off and back on to ensure the system resets.
  • Inspect Physically: Check the USB port for any visible damage or moisture. If the port appears damaged, it might need a professional assessment.

Diagnose the Issue:

  • Device Manager: Open Device Manager and check under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" for any devices marked with a yellow warning. This indicates a malfunction.
  • USB Driver: Update the USB driver using HP Support Assistant or manually from HP's website. If the latest driver doesn't resolve the issue, consider rolling back to a previous version.

Test with Different Devices:

  • Other USB Devices: Try connecting different USB devices to verify if the issue is isolated to the port itself. If other devices work correctly in different ports, the issue might be limited to the damaged port.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
