Using a NVME 128GB drive in a Elitebook 840 g2

I have tried every bios combination i can think of, during with 10 install although it sees the drive fine it says it cant install on it. I have updated the bios to the latest version etc. I installed win10 in it on a sata drive and it works fine, also sees the nvme drive just fine as well. How thoughts on how to get this drive compatible to install win 10 on?

You can install Windows 10 on standard HDD's or SSD's or M.2 SSD's, which ever supported by your machine. From the following Manual/Guide

Page #2 indicates you machine only supports 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD therefore M.2 SSD (SATA or NVMe)  are out of question. You can install 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD drive.

So, even though its seen, and seen as a boot option i cant install to it? Error reads as in photo

Hi, @DellsAreBetter 

When I look at chapter 1, page 2 of the manual, they do list a PCIe M.2 SSD as supported, so my assumption would be that a NVMe SSD would work.

What I suggest you do is to go into the BIOS and see if there is a setting to select the M.2 SSD as the primary drive or boot device.  If there is, make the change if you have not done so already, and save the settings.

If there is no such setting, or you still get the same error...

Run the diskpart utility, and clean the disk, and hopefully windows will install.

Using this utility will erase all partitions and data on the drive.

The error says "Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." Maybe, M.2 port is not enabled in your BIOS. I have an EliteBook 840 G3 and our BIOS should be the same.   You can check the status of M.2 in Port Option in Advanced in the BIOS. You'll see M2 SSD1 at the bottom of the screen. If a check mark is not next to it, highlight it and click Enter and save and exit the BIOS.

Also, another error message at the bottom of your screen shot reads "Windows cannot be installed on drive 1 partition 1." The screen shot also shows Drive 0 Partition 1, so it looks like you are trying to install Windows10 to a new M.2 drive while your machine has the existing hard drive in place. You can physically remove the SATA drive and start over the installation again for the best result.

I have a G3 as well. Here are the bios / advanced / port settings from a G3 and a G2, neither shows a M.2 option. Here are the pictures. As far as the NVME drive goes, it has been formatted and repartitioned several times in this attempt.  The SATA drive installed is just to test to see if the NVME drive could be seen in windows 10, and it does.

All the bios settings have been changed and tried in every configuration. I've done the disk clean and I always get the Winload.exe error. The drive has been thoroughly tested and is good.

 I should also mention the drive in question is a Lite On 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 2230 SSD (CL1-3D128-Q11)

Here's a screen shot of my 840 G3 that shows an M.2 option. Obviously, your BIOS and mine are different. Check Boot Options and Built-in Device Options.

I also have an EliteBook 850 G1 and its M.2 option is in Built-in Device Options, as shown below. If you still don't see it, I guess your machine has M.2 enabled by default therefore, the reason for your inability for the Windows installation is something else.
