HP Pavilion x360 14ba073tx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP Pavilion x360 14ba073tx laptop. It does have 1TB SSHD and 8GB of RAM. I want to upgrade this laptop with SSD. I have following questions:

1) Which type of SSD I can install? M.2 SATA or M.2 NVME or only 2.5 inch SATA SSD?

2) What is the highest capacity of each type of SSD (SATA/NVME) I can install? I mean 128GB or 256GB or 512 GB or 1TB?

3) If NVME SSD is supported then which type is supported? I.e. Gen 2 or Gen 3 and X1 or X2 or x4?

4) Can I use SSD + existing SSHD setup? If yes, then what is the maximum capacity of SSD I can install? And which type of SSD can be used in SSD + SSHD combination?

5) What is the maximum amount of RAM I can install?

6) Which type of RAM is supported? 2133MHz or 2400MHz? The specs sheet says 2133MHz but the service manual reads 2400.

7) If I use two 8GB sticks then will I get 16GB or only 12GB, as mentioned in service manual?

Please answer all the questions, so that it will get clear once and all.

Thanks in advance.

The series of Pavilion x360 14-ba0xx has Dual storage options

1. You can only use M.2 SATA 3. The following products are compatible

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-x360-14m-ba015dx/CT11988958

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-x360-14m-ba015dx/CT11988980

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-x360-14m-ba015dx/CT11988942

2. Ditto

3. N/A

4. You can use M.2 and existing HDD I don't know whay you asking for If yes, then what is the maximum capacity of SSD I can install? again

5. For RAM, you can install up 10 16GB (2 x 8GB), the following link shows compatible RAM

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-x360-14m-ba015dx/CT11988936

6. as 5 above, 2400MHz can be installed but it runs at 2133MHz.

7. You should get 16GB.

@Banhien,

Thanks for the reply.

The question I am asking repeatedly is there any specific limitation on the capacity of storage to be used in following conditions:

1) Only SSD (either M.2 SATA SSD or 2.5 inch SATA SSD)

2) Combination of SSD with HDD (in this case it would be M.2 SATA SSD & existing HDD or SSHD)

It is because the service manual reads the different combinations and the capacity of respective storage options. If there was no limitation then why would they specifically mention that in SSD + HDD/SSHD conbicombin it would be 128GB + 1TB respectively? Though it is not specifically written as this is the maximum capacity combination, one would suspect why they have mentioned in service manual?

Now as it is clear that this model (14ba073tx) does not support NVME, the only option is M.2 SATA SSD. However, the next question arises:

1) Can I use Samsung 860 EVO, which is MLC. Because, the manual says it should be TLC. Need expert advise on the same.

I read in other topic/forum that if you install other than TLC, such SSD will not be recognised by BIOS/system. The link for the topic/forum is (refer post no. 3, 4, 5 & 6)

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/How-do-I-upgrade-my-notebook-t...

2) Whether the vacant M.2 slot is locked by BIOS or not? I mean, if I install M.2 SATA SSD, will it be detected by BIOS/system? Because I read in various articles about how HP limits the upgrades for laptops by tweaking BIOS.

Lastly, will it be a safest option to go for 1TB Samsung 860 EVO 2.5 inch SSD (again with 3D NAND MLC) and replace the existing 1TB SSHD?

About RAM, it is written in service manual that the system supports only max 12GB of RAM. If it is so, then will be able to get 16GB if I install another 8GB stick(apart from existing 8GB one sticks) in the remaining vacant slot?

In case of RAM, it is written in service manual that the maximum memory is 8GB + 4GB sticks totalling 12GB. Hence, the confusion is if the detection of other 8GB stick is limited by BIOS and if only 4GB out of new 8GB is detected, then it makes sense to go for only 4GB stick instead of 8GB. Getting confused here.

Thanks in advance.

1. I did reply this question and gave some compatible products. Only SATA 3.

2. Addding M.2 SATA 3 SSD to your machine will give it as a dual storage option machine.

Note: You can't use MLC only TLC.

Regards.

@Banhien

@Erico

@Huffer or

@anyone who could give more clarity on this issue...

1) Can I add & use 1TB Crucial MX500 M.2 SATA III TLC SSD in M.2 slot, along with my existing 2.5inch 1TB Seagate SSHD (with 8GB NAND) as a dual storage configuration? Will BIOS recognise it in dual storage configuration?

I am once again asking this question, because in manual it is written that in dual storage configuration it supports 128GB M.2 SATA TLC and 1TB HDD (not SSHD).

2) If the above mentioned dual storage option with more than 128GB M.2 SATA SSD is not possible, can I replace existing 2.5inch 1TB Seagate SSHD with 1TB 2.5 inch Samsung 860 EVO SATA III SSD (which is V-NAND with 3bit MLC and not TLC)?

3) If the option no. 2 is also not possible, can I replace existing SSHD with 1TB 2.5 inch Crucial MX500 SATA III TLC SSD?

4) If any of the above options not possible, then please suggest how can I upgrade my laptop 14ba073tx with SSD?

Thanks in advance.
