Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Is it my imagination, or is it getting harder and harder to get information from the HP web site?

I've been having some problems with my computer (hey, it's been two years, I'm not surprised), and since I am about to have to wipe the system and do a total new system install, I want to do a couple of upgrades at the same time.

I want to upgrade my memory from 8GB to 16GB, but that would require knowing how many memory slots my computer has. I will probably also try to invest in and install a SSD drive for the speed improvements. But no matter how I search, I cannot seem to verify how many memory slots the computer has. (I assume 2, but I don't want to go purchase 2 8GB memory sticks until I know for sure that's what I need.)

Anybody know this info on the 17z-y000 / V1R69AV system?

OK. Max RAM is 16GB of DDR3L 1600MHz RAM (2x8GB)

There are two slots. You can purchase from your preferred brand

Example:

https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/hp-17z-y000-cto#MEMORYFilters

On page 47 of the service manual, you can see the steps to upgrade RAM

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05143572

Replacing the HDD with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD will be a much more noticeable upgrade in everyday performance than the extra 8GB of RAM. You can purchase from your preferred brand.

On page 42 of the service manual, you can see the steps to replace the drive.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05143572

Then perform a clean install of Windows 10 and let it completely update

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Then download HP support assistant and let it update drivers and much more

Hope it helps,

Hi,

Since it is a CTO (customizable at purchase) machine you will have to let us know what CPU and graphics is in the machine which determines the amount of RAM.

You can see in task manager.

Service manual:

Let me know,

David

Um ... just asking ... I don't expect it, but it would be nice.

It looks like SSDs are extremely compact, and in the manual, lots of things are shown, including both regular hard drives, and SSD drives ... again, unlikely, but wouldn't it be nice? Any chance that both an SSD and a HD could fit in the laptop?

It would be the best of both worlds ... operating software on the permanently present SSD, basic data files on the permanently present HD, media files and the like on the removable external HD.

No harm in asking.

Oh, and also, the instructions provided above are for installing a new installation of the operating system. What are the reasons (besides just being cleaner and neater) for doing this, instead of just cloning the current drive, to avoid the hassles of the entire annoying set-up process? I ask because it is always a hassle to hunt down the password for one of my email addresses, and it requires somebody else to go hunting for the information, due to odd circumstances. Cloning would likely be quicker and simpler (and has been recommended elsewhere), but just how much better / more stable would it be to just install the operating system from scratch?

[edit]Removed the above as 'the solution' to keep people from passing over the topic with the updated information. It was a good solution, but now I need slightly more information.[/edit]

Not very nice removing the solution, as this is actually a different question than in the title. 😪

Kidding. Anyway, there is no extra slot for an M2 SSD. So the best idea is to replace the 2.5" HDD with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD.

It is possible to insert an M2 SATA3 SSD (which will have the same speed as the 2.5" SATA3 SSD), however, you would need to purchase the M2 SSD connector board and it is placed where the 2,5" drive is at the moment. So, in answer to your question, it is not possible to have both drives at the same time.

2.5" HDD or SSD2.5" HDD or SSDM2 SSD with bracketM2 SSD with bracket

The reason for the clean install is just because I feel it is more efficient. The OS will be the latest without updates/upgrades and the drivers will be the latest without updates. I also like to have a clean system without PUPs or any other unwanted software. It give a chance to put everything back in order again and have a clean start knowing that there will be nothing external (software, etc...) affecting the OS. Having said that, I have also often cloned the drives without any problem and especially in "buisness" situations, I usually clone.

Hope it helps,

David

Yes, it definitely helps! Thanks for the info and the answers! Now to go back and re-mark the solution to the original question! Again, thanks, both of you!
