I've just bought a HP Spectre x360 15-df0002na 4K Convertible Laptop with Pen with 3 Year Care Pack. On offer with it as a bundle was the HP Spectre USB-C Travel Dock.
They aren't compatible, according to the specs on the HP site, so I didn't buy one. But it is the only one that says it is for the Spectre.
The laptop includes a 135 W AC power adapter. The dock says specifically "AC adapter of 65W or less". 135W is clearly higher than 65W. HOW ARE THESE COMPATIBLE?
(The Spectre 13 inch has a 65W adapter included, but mine is 15 inch and Spectres of that screen size all have a 135W power adapter).
That makes my question - what is compatible? Perhaps none of the HP offerings. I liked the idea of power through so that I only need to plug in ONE cable when at my desk. The ones I have found elsewhere need a USB-C power supply, but the HP power adapter has a round one. The other HP docks that could use the 4.5mm round supply are all sold WITH a power supply - but smaller than that included with my laptop. I don't need to buy another power supply. I would like to be able to connect two screens at once - 2560x1440, plus ethernet, and various USB and SD card slots.

@Fellwalker Here's all you need to know about the USB-C Port and what it supports:
USB Type-C is a smaller, reversible USB connector that can transmit data, video, audio, and data (USB 3.1) as well as provide charging power to many devices (USB power delivery or PD).
USB Type-C video modes (Alternate mode): USB Type-C ports support adapters that can output different types of video such as HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort, all from one USB Type-C port on your computer or device.
USB Type-C power delivery (USB PD): USB Type-C power delivery is bi-directional, so a device can either send or receive power. This power can be transferred at the same time the device is transmitting data across the connection.
For more information about USB Type-C, see USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification (in English).

Thank you for your response, but it wasn't the size or shape or function that is the problem.
HP is selling the Spectre x360 15.6 with a 135W power supply. They are recommending their USB - C dock which accepts a power supply of MAXIMUM 65W. If I plug in my power supply to that adapter I risk electronics damage or even fire. It provides more than double the power that the Dock can cope with.

I have had confirmation by way of a phone call from HP Technical Support, that the dock is semi-compatible with the 15" 4K Spectre x360. It works as a dock from the laptop for power, so you could charge a phone but it cannot be used to charge the laptop. It works with peripherals.
If you had a USB-PD supply (we think those come with some models of 13" Spectre) you could probably use it to charge the laptop whilst said laptop was off or asleep. There are reports of other docks with lower USB-PD power supplies being able to charge whilst off.
Apparently the thunderbolt/ charging port on the laptop has a maximum capacity of 100W, so it is highly recommended to charge the laptop directly using its dedicated charger.
That makes it an overly expensive device for what it does for my laptop.
I've asked them to get the listing page for the travel dock corrected to explain this, but don't hold out much hope of that happening any time soon.
