I have old presario v3000 core 2 duo.. still functioning... ( Long Live HP product :)!!! )... recently i want tool DIY project to upgrade this old laptop..  My biggest obstacle is.. to find the best..the fastest processor that compatible to my motherboard.. Personally i want to choose Intel Core 2 Duo T7800.. By intel side.. there is 2 type of T7800 (socket P) SLAF6 and T7800 (BGA) SLA75.. but not sure it my motherboard suppport it or not.. my chipset i945GM.. socket 479 mPGA.. so actualy i get confuse with intel side cause same socket but can use for 3 or 4 generation of processor..

Chapter 1 has the list of supported Intel processors.

 

The T7800 definitely won't work because your notebook's chipset only supports processors with a max FSB speed of 667 MHz, and the T7800 has an 800 MHz FSB.

 

If you want to experiment with a Core 2 Duo processor, then the best one you could experiment with would be the T7600.

The T7800 definitely won't work because your notebook's chipset only supports processors with a max FSB speed of 667 MHz, and the T7800 has an 800 MHz FSB.

 

If you want to experiment with a Core 2 Duo processor, then the best one you could experiment with would be the T7600.

BGA is not a socket. Stands for Ball Grid Array and means that is the soldered on version of the processor. In your case the highest and best CPU is a T7200 which was HP Part Number:

 

435849-001

You are capped at 2 gb of RAM DDR2 667 so it is very difficult to get much performance out of it. Good luck.
