Hello hpenvy1,

I am having a hard time tracking down which part number your laptops wifi card actually is.

You would have to go into the Device Manager and see what it lists.

The regular specs only state an Intel 802.11 b/g/n card.

But the Maintenance Manual says it could be either an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 WLAN (300 Mbps) module or an

Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 WLAN (450 Mbps) module.

Either way, your laptop should be able to support up to 300 Mbps.

Note that I said "up to". There are lots of factors involved that will slow the connection down besides the built in card type and antenna.

Its still best to use the ethernet cable if you can, but you should be ok using Wifi also.

Hi,

Manual: Page 21

There is BIOS whitelist, and you use only the dual band cards with HP part number given in your manual.

Hi,

BIOS whitelist means your notebook will not allow you to even boot beyond BIOS if you install wireless card without the HP spare part sticker even if the card is listed compatible in your Manual.

Intel Centrino card you buy should have the "HP spare part" sticker on it. That is.. it would be sold by their HP part number by the seller.

Please read this thread to know what is BIOS whitelist which are seen in HP notebooks manufactured upto 2014.

HP Expert Paul Tikkanen has explained it beautifully: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Wireless-and-Networking/WLAN-Module-ID-702/td-p/5976238

Hi visruth,

I cant quite figure out from that link, if it is possible for me to upgrade, from my present Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230, with only 802.11 b/g/n, to  lets say a wireless card with 802.11 ac, because i have now tested the wireless connection with my new 300/60 mbps connection, and im at the highest getting 200 mbps download on a good day 😞

Can you tell me if it is possible to upgrade to a 802.11 ac wireless card ?

Best regards

Hi,

You cannot upgrade to any other wireless cards than what is given in your Manual - you've to get the exact HP part number with "HP spare part" sticker on the card.
