I have a PCIe Gen 3 that came with it but I want to upgrade to a faster Gen 4 and larger capacity SSD.

I looked up the exact Ryzen processor on this and it seems it is compatible with up to x8 lanes. AMD Ryzen 7 5800U Specs | TechPowerUp CPU Database
So I may try get a gen4 with 8x lanes for future compatibility with newer laptops.

I would definitely buy a Gen 4.0 SSD because most of them don't cost much more than the Gen 3's and in some cases, they cost even less and certainly if you plan to move it to a newer PC in the future that has full support for a Gen 4.0 SSD.
The official AMD specs under the Connectivity section indicate the processor/motherboard is PCIe 3.0.
