Since I got this notebook about a year ago, I've had this infuriating problem that while typing in text in any application, every so often, the cursor will jump to another part of the text window, and occasionally, in addition to that, a block of text will be selected as well (and then promptly deleted if you keep typing). Obviously, this wreaks havoc on text entry, and you can even lose important text if you don't catch it happening right away. I have verified again and again that this occurs without ANY contact being made with the touchpad -- not even a light brush or anything (my hands aren't anywhere near the touchpad at all). Also, the mouse pointer doesn't seem to jump around, only the text cursor.
I have the latest Synaptics touchpad driver installed (v19.0.12.112), and I have also tried out the older version of the driver (19.0.12.104 Rev.A) from the HP download page, but none of this has made any difference.
What is going on here? Do I have a defective touchpad?

Hey there! @ogrfnkl, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!
I understand cursor on your laptop jumps erratically while typing the text.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Have you tried checking with an external mouse? Does the issue persist?
Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.
I have checked the records and found an article related to the issue you have mentioned.
The cursor jumps or moves unexpectedly on the display when typing on the notebook. This extra movement is caused by the sensitivity of the touchpad.
The sensitivity of the original touchpad driver cannot be adjusted or manually disabled.
To fix the issue uninstall the touchpad drivers from device manager and install the touchpad driver using HP recovery manager.
Refer this article to know how to restore drivers using HP recovery manager.
I'll keep an eye out for your response.
I hope you have a great day!

Hi, thanks for replying.
I have followed your suggestion and reinstalled the touchpad driver using Recovery Manager. This has made no difference to the problem at hand. The text cursor is still jumping every so often to the location of the mouse pointer... What should I try next?
