I cannot find out (without taking apart my laptop) how many RAM slots I have available and which component to buy. My currently installed RAM is 4gb and I would like to upgrade to 8gb. So my question is, do I have to buy 1x4gb RAM card to add to my current 4gb card (to make 2x4gb total) or buy a 1x8gb card, and then which specific card is compatible with my laptop. Thanks very much for your help in advance.

Yes it does and the Manual shows how to do the installation.
4gb module:
4 GB 862397-855
Follow pages 32-37 of the Manual for upgrade procedure. Good luck and please post back with any more questions; accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

You have to tell us the full product or model number. That series of laptops can have a low-end Celeron processor in which case it has one memory slot, maximum 8 gigs of DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM and the higher end "Core" models have 2 slots for up to 2 x 8 gigs of DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM. Here's the manual; see p. 2:
Memory access shown on p. 32-37.
