 F9M02UA#ABA pavilion 17 laptop.

I had problems with win 10 updates for a long time.

The info on MS forums was to wait for the creators fall edition.

I've tried updating even using the HP support assistant to download the latest updates and

all I get is some updates that don't fix any problems or just a message to call microsoft.

with error code   0x8007001f.

I'm not counting on MS for any help with this but I think I should find some help here.

Will I be able to update this to the latest version of WIN 10

I also got an email saying that if I don't update by april10, 2018  I wont be able to get

future updates.

If I can't get it to update win10 what is plan B?

Should I revert back to 8.1?

How would I do that without losing apps and data?

An upgrade to Windows 10 will corrupt the Windows 8 recovery partition such that it now will not work.

Sorry, I don't have good news for you ...

This thread has tables listing all the consumer notebook models that HP has tested for the FCU (Win10 v1709) and yours is not listed:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Why-can-t-update-to-latest-ver...

That could be the reason that the Upgrade is not working.

If you want to try to force the Upgrade, then you need to make an image backup of your notebook prior to doing that, because if that fails, you will likely be left with a corrupted PC that will not boot.

I personally prefer to use third-party Backup solutions as they tend to be both more flexible and more reliable than any built-in solutions.

Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition.  This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 15 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore.

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.

Then, use this link to download and create Win10 install media (in USB stick form) for your PC:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Once you have that, insert it into your PC USB slot (do NOT boot from it!), find the drive letter for the USB stick in File Explorer, right-click the setup.exe file and select Run as Administrator -- that will start the 1709 Upgrade.

If this works, it will overwrite the Windows install on your PC with v1709 but will leave the data, settings, and applications intact.

---------------------------------

Also, unfortunately, your Upgrade to Win10 from Win8.1 most likely corrupted the HP recovery information, so at this point, there is no way to "revert back" to Win8.1 on your PC.  You would have to order something known as HP Recovery Media and use that to do a factory reset of your PC, and that erases everything on the drive in the process.

The upgrade didn't erase the restore partition with the original win 8.

Should that work?

What should I look for to check if I have what I need.

I have Seagate discwizard backups with my win 10 images backup.

This computer would be for watching Netflix or things like that or

Maybe just donate it to somewhere
