That is because no type of battery lasts forever.  Battery storage capacity diminishes over cycles, time and temperature.

I would expect that you have had the notebook for a few years.

There is a reason that battery manufacturers warrantee their batteries for one year. 
It is the battery chemistry that causes it.
No laptop or battery in any device will last forever no matter how much we all want that to be the case.
